Water kefir is non-dairy and vegan option and a substitute for milk kefir.

 

Turmeric Water Kefir RECIPE:

  • 1L mason jar
  • plain  water
  • 1/4 cup organic sugar (cane, turbinado, Rapa dura)
  • 2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup Re-hydrated water kefir grains
  • 1 tablespoon fresh turmeric root, grated
  • 1 small nub of ginger
  • pinch of black pepper

Preparation:
Ferment #1

  • put the sugar in the mason jar
  • dissolve with a very small amount of hot water
  • fill the jar with cool filtered water
  • add the hydrated water kefir grains
  • seal the lid  and let it ferment on the counter for 48 hours( not longer )
  • strain into a glass measuring cup, keep the grains,
  • pour the kefir into a clean mason jar

Ferment #2 (adding flavors)

  • Add the grated turmeric, ginger, and black pepper to the water kefir
  •  Cover and  let it ferment 48 hours
  • strain the turmeric and ginger
    store in the fridge

Flavors to Try

  • add a handful or frozen or fresh berries to the second ferment
  • for  a fruit-flavored drink, add grape, cherry or pomegranate juice to the second ferment
